Intern Training

Who We Are

Student Counselling and Development (SCD) at York University provides psychological services to members of the York University community. Included among the services provided are counselling (individual, group, and couple), responding to critical incidents, and various consultative and outreach activities. Our clients are undergraduate and graduate students registered at the university. Consultations with faculty and staff also occur as required. SCD provides services to a diverse community (gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, cultural background, ability, age, religion etc.) of approximately 60,000 faculty, staff, and students.

Student Counselling and Development (SCD) offers an intensive eight-and-a-half-month counsellor training program to psychology and social work students who are at the master’s and doctoral levels in their education and attending accredited universities in Canada or the USA. We offer an internship placement of 500 plus hours and can accommodate up to 15 interns. SCD supervisors include psychologists / psychological associates, social workers and psychotherapists, all of which are registered with their respective professional colleges. SCD staff work from a variety of theoretical orientations, and as such, the focus of SCD’s internship program is on training interns as generalists and encouraging aspiring counsellors to explore modalities that align with their personal approaches to counselling. SCD offers diverse learning experiences for interns that include opportunities to provide case conceptualization and triage, crisis intervention, and exposure to various theoretical models of counselling for individuals, couples and groups. Opportunities are available to work with a wide variety of client populations and presenting issues. Examples of presenting issues include, but are not limited to, coping with developmental milestones, anxiety disorders, depression, acute and historic trauma, chronic physical illness, sexuality, relationship difficulties, and issues arising from systemic barriers.

Roles and Duties of Interns

Orientation to Student Counselling and Development (SCD) occurs in late August before York classes begin. During their placement interns, can expect to be onsite at least 20 hours per week depending on the requirements of their program. While on site, students will work under the supervision of a staff counsellor (psychologist, social worker or psychotherapist as required by the program). Supervision occurs in either a small group or individual format and consists of approximately four hours per week plus a 1.5-hour team case disposition meeting. Interns are required to record all sessions for supervision review. Interns are expected to carry a caseload of five to eight ongoing counselling clients. In addition, interns are expected to attend the two-hour weekly Colloquium Series given by staff and guest speakers from the community on topics related to current best practices in counselling. These colloquia are interactive, focused on the process of psychotherapy across diverse client groups and provide exposure to professional ethics and standards. The emphasis of the Colloquium Series is on the applied rather than the theoretical aspects of these topics. The time and day of the Colloquium Series are made available in the spring. Additional / optional learning opportunities vary each year and may include activities such as co-facilitation of process therapy groups and / or development and delivery of workshops.
