Mural Painting Submission Details

Student Counselling & Development (SCD) wants your help to paint a mural that will bring new life to our reception area.

SCD is a counselling and development centre at York University’s Keele campus that provides a range of essential services to the York University Community in order to optimize the quality of the scholarly and communal life at the university. The primary aim of SCD is to help students realize, develop, and fulfill their personal potential in order to maximally benefit from their university experience.

SCD is looking to enhance the reception area with a mural that reflects our values of mental wellbeing, diversity, and inclusion. The mural will be one of the first things that students see when they walk into the reception space and it is our hope that the mural will help create a friendly, welcoming, safe and inclusive space for all of the individuals who pass through our doors.

Submissions are now open and will be accepted until November 1, 2019 upon which the department will be reviewing and selecting the selected design. The artist of the submission will then be contacted for next steps.

Mural Specifications

  • Location: The mural will be located in the SCD reception area at N110 Bennett Centre for Student Services (see photo at right).
  • Size of Canvas: 48” (4 feet) x 60” (5 feet)

What’s in it for you?

The selected student will be contacted by email within one week of the submission deadline. The selected submission will be chosen based on the following criteria:

  • The artwork must be an original work that is wholly conceptualized and executed by the participant/s.
  • Designs which copied the composition of existing works will automatically be disqualified, even if they are rendered in a different style, medium, color scheme, or even if other elements have been added.
  • Concept, creativity and visual execution of the proposed mural will also be considered.

The selected student will be contacted by email within ten (10) days of the selection. If the selected student cannot be contacted within that time, an alternative eligible submission may be selected. York University is not responsible for the failure of any reason whatsoever of a selected potential student to receive notification or for York University to receive a selected potential student's response.

The selected submission will be provided with the materials necessary to create their mural in the Student Counselling & Development office. Upon completion of the painting, a $250 stipend will be paid to the student.
