Access to Counselling
Student Counselling, Health & Well-being (SCHW) operates on a walk-in model basis.
Counselling Centre business hours:
Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Our last walk-in appointment is at 3 p.m. daily.
You will need approximately two hours to complete paperwork and speak with a counsellor.
Between the hours of 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. tend to be the busiest walk-in times, so arriving first thing in the morning (9 a.m.) may help expedite the appointment.
What to expect from your appointment
Upon arrival, you will spend approximately 30 minutes to complete forms about your concerns.
Once you are assigned a counsellor, you will meet with the counsellor to address the concerns that brought you into counselling.
Our goal is to empower you in the change process through the utilization of suggestions and referrals so you can expect to leave the counselling session with a plan to help you get started on the change process.
Research indicates that often one session is all you need to begin to address your concerns and create positive change. Remember you can always come back if circumstances change or you just want to check in or report back on the progress that you have made.
Should you choose to come back to follow up, you will likely not see the same counsellor as you did for the initial appointment. Regardless of who you see, the counsellor will begin the follow up session by checking in on the “next steps plan” that was created in the first session.
Individual Short Term Counselling
In some circumstances, ongoing individual counselling may be recommended.
If it is determined that ongoing counselling is needed and the issues can be addressed within our short-term model of six to eight sessions, you may be placed on our wait list to receive these services.
SCHW services are based on a short-term counselling model that is grounded in current research which suggests that most client concerns can be adequately addressed in approximately six to eight sessions. However, SCHW counsellors are responsive to the needs of students and therefore work collaboratively throughout the counselling process, including using evaluation measures, to determine the length of counselling required.
The frequency of sessions may range from weekly to monthly or longer depending on the presenting issue.
