Student Counselling, Health & Well-being's walk-in counselling is intended to provide students immediate access to a qualified counselling professional in a safe and positive space. The focus of the session is on the issue (s) that you have identified as having brought you into the office today.
The counsellor will work with you for approximately 50 minutes focusing on the strengths and skills you possess to help you identify and practice things you can do immediately to begin resolving the issue(s) you have identified. During the session you will collaborate with your counsellor to create a “next steps” plan of action to get you started on the path to change. It is our hope that at the end of the session you will feel supported, empowered, and better equipped to tackle the issue(s) you have identified.
Walk-in counselling may be utilized more than once. However, it is our expectation that before returning you will have completed the next steps plan that was co-created in your previous session. As you may not be paired with the same counsellor for additional visits, counsellors will always begin your return session with a review of your progress on the “next steps” plan.
In some cases, it may be determined that short-term counselling would be beneficial.
Ongoing Counselling
In order to provide equitable service to all students at York University, Student Counselling, Health & Well-being (SCHW) works under a short-term therapy model. We view our work with students as providing time-limited support to help address issues that may be getting in the way of students realizing their full potential at a specific time in their educational experience. Although longer term support may be beneficial in some cases, counsellors at SCHW work with students to focus on what is achievable within the timeframe of our short-term model.
