Student Support

SCHW offers a range of supports to students which can be found on each of the sub-tabs under “Student Support”. These include the following:

Individual Counselling

Walk-in Counselling

Walk-in Counselling is intended to provide students timely access to a qualified counselling professional in a safe and positive space. The focus of the session is on the issue(s) that you have identified as having brought you into the office that day.

Emergency support

Emergency support is provided from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Short-term Counselling

In order to provide equitable service to all students at York University, SCHW works under a short-term therapy model. We view our work with students as providing time-limited support to help address issues that may be getting in the way of students realizing their full potential at a specific time in their educational experience. Although longer term support may be beneficial in some cases, counsellors at SCHW work with students to focus on what is achievable within the timeframe of our short-term model.

Group Counselling

Process Group

SCHW Process Groups are held weekly and are open only to invited students. The group is led by a SCHW counsellor. Topics discussed change on a weekly basis and are student-driven according to need. Students have an opportunity to obtain psychoeducation and provide their peers with mutual support, information, and skills.

2SLGBTQIA+ Support Group

SCHW offers a drop-in support group to York's 2SLGBTQIA+ student community. SCHW counsellors who identify as part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community facilitate this group and create a safe and confidential space where stories can be shared and support given. The group gives students the opportunity to be themselves in a world that often says that being themselves is not okay. Topics covered include coming out, gender and sexuality, finding safe spaces on campus, managing stresses and self-care. Group members are encouraged to lead the conversation and have agency over deciding what they would like discussed on any given week.

Workshops

SCHW Skills Workshop

The purpose of the SCHW Skills Workshop is to equip participants with the skills they need to better manage stressors and to reach their full academic potential. The workshop is open to all current York University students.
